Official reply from MSI. Re: WinSys2 "MSI Tech. 09/19/2007 No, this is a MSI utility info which required when running MSI based utility. If you do not want to install this file, you can download and install/use Nvidia's reference driver which can also work as well: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_162.18.html"

If you have this file right click on it and choose Properties. Look under version and if it says "DOT MFC Application" then it is part of MSI's Nvidia graphics card to do with overclocking. DOT means Dynamic Overclocking Technology Seems when the driver is updated it does not remove the orginal file "WinSys.exe so renames the new file with a 2 at the end of the file's name. This is to allow rolling back the driver if required. More information

If Winsys2.exe is a backup (See Kevin's comment) why would it then be loaded at startup?

I know I have an MSI motherboard, so for the moment i'm going to leave it there. but there is NO information about this from MSI, AVG, and Malwarebytes, and whatever i could find was usually forum stuff, non-official. They should explain a bit more.

Winsys2 is part of a program called Rainmeter. Similar to yahoo widgets, rainmeter is a fun tool that shows the users cpu/ ram usage and hdd space on the desktop. do NOT remove winsys2 if you have rainmeter. If you never installed this program, there are trojans that do go under this name.

I had this appear on a freshly built system, right after I installed the MSI NVida display driver. It appears that it is a small application meant to run the NVida Taskbar Utility. (I know this because after a reboot, I got the message, asking me if I wanted to run this application and I said yes. It then placed an icon in my task bar for the NVida settings.) To make sure I scanned the file using Symantec AV, MS Security Essentials and a few others just to make sure and all scans were OK. Cheers
