csrss.exe

File Name: csrss.exe

The csrss.exe is a process utilized by the Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem to manage a majority of the graphical instructions under Windows operating system. Its critical function is to control threading and Win32 console window features, such as creating and/or deleting threads, and implementing some portions of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment. Threading is where the application splits itself into multiple simultaneous running tasks. Threads supported by csrss.exe are different from processes in that threads are commonly contained within the process, with various threads sharing resources within the same process. This is a necessary windows service and should always be running. Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and must be running at all times for stable operation to continue. *WARNING* If you find it outside of the folder, c:\windows\system32\ then it's most likely malware and is possibly a trojan!
