OpenOffice.org is an office suite completely compatible with Microsoft Office, but with the major advantage that it is free. OpenOffice includes various Microsoft Office tools, a word processor, spreadsheet and tool to create presentations compatible with Word, Excel and PowerPoint respectively. These all offer a large variety of tools and options resulting in the difference between the 2 applications being minimal. I don't use open office very often as I hace office 2007 student. I got open office to replace the missing database package ACCESS. I'm going to turn it off!
