Several Apple programs require this to open. Sure it uses some extra resources, but I use the quicktime player quite a bit. For one, it is generally more stable then the memory hog Windows Media Player.

Memory hogger like most of the Apple softwares, including iTunes.

There's no problem with safety on this, but I rarely use QuickTime. There's no need for this to be running.
